I’m on a trip to Chiang Mai this week and flew the direct Air Asia route from Ubon. It was a cloudy day when I left so I was a bit disappointed because I haven’t flown this route on a clear day yet. Once we got to Roi Et though, things cleared off and I had a perfect view of some places I can’t wait to explore in the future. Sit on the right side of plane going to Chiang Mai if you want to see these locations. The aerial pictures below are mine and the ground pictures you can click on to see the source. A map of all these locations is at the bottom. You can also click here to see a previous post of the CNX to BKK route.
Leaving Ubon Ratchathani. Chayangkhun Rd. runs up and to the right. You can see Rajabhat University in the middle of the picture. All the red top buildings.

Roi Et – In the middle of the city there is an airstrip called Rob Muang Airport which is not the same as the airport in the next picture. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Roi Et Airport Northeast of the city.

Nam Phong Air Force Base – Today this Air Force base is only used as a bombing range but it was very active in the early 70′s. There’s a web site with loads of interesting pictures and stories here. The 2nd pic is from 1972.

Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area, Laos – It’s a terrible picture but the mountains on the horizon are from an area NE of Vientiane, Laos.

Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าภูหลวง

This is an airstrip in Loei that I can find no information about. Any ideas?

This is the controversial Mae Moh power plant in Lampang. It is the largest coal-fired power plant in SE Asia and provides power to Bangkok and the North.
